The right glassware is an integral part of the wine appreciation. t’s true that you can get wine in cans or cardboard cartons and perhaps there may come a time when we drink wine through straws. Hopefully that day is a very long way off, because that would ruin many excellent wines and put the corkscrew manufacturers out of business!
Good glassware (not necessarily expensive glasses) is central to the enjoyment of a good wine.In fact, very expensive glassware is often not a sensible choice as they tend to have long stems and a high centre of gravity.A glass filled with wine is inherently unstable and there can’t be anyone who hasn't tipped over the occasional glass during a conversation or meal.Wine glasses will break and there’s nothing you can do about that, aside from buying glasses that are fairly sturdy and reasonably priced.
A good wine glass is basically quite simple – essentially it should really be made of glass. It should be perfectly clear with no tints or opaque colours because apart from just holding the wine, decent glassware should also display it. The true deep colour of a wine can be a beautiful sight in a clear, clean glass just as a range of bottles can be impressive in a well constructed wine rack.A good wine glass should also enhance, or at least preserve, the wine's bouquet. Good wine glasses are narrower at the top than at the bottom to concentrate the aromas of the wine. Experienced wine drinkers swirl the wine in the glass before taking a sip to release more of its bouquet.
So if you plan to buy wine-related gifts this Christmas, any decent (not hugely expensive) glasses will do the trick. The only truly unacceptable wine glass is the one most associated with the high life in popular culture and the cinema - the saucer-like champagne glass - guaranteed to make the wine go flat in record time. It is perfect for a shrimp cocktail starter, but otherwise for champagne and sparkling wines use a flute.

Pubs and clubs across the UK could be getting a new pint glass available soon. Welcome the new 'Schooner' glass. Basically, the schooner glass is a glass that holds two thirds of a pint. The move follows a bundle of mixed opinions from the pub trade that would love the opportunity tot sell smaller measure of beer for stronger ales. Reports have also claimed that this beer glass will give females a chance to order a beer in a smaller measure as reports have suggested that women think the pint is too much.
The name of the glass, 'Schooner' orginates from OZ and was a nickname invented for the glass as pint glasses became to hot in the sun. Why people think that same methodology will apply to us in beyond me but pub landlords in the UK are taking it very seriously indeed. Many people are a bit scared that it will create a boycott like effect for the pint glass at pubs. Currently, pubs from around the UK are only allowed to sell pints in a pint, half pint and third pint. The smaller shaped glass will no doubt cause a headache for pub staff cutlery as the glass itself looks almost identical to a pint glass and there will no doubt be mistakes. However, many people are in favour of getting this new pint glass as the idea to drink less is always a prefered incentive. It is the same with wine glasses. In many pubs they will only sell a much larger size wine glasses in the bar and in their tableware.
The Scottish Licensed Trade Association said there was no call for the two-third pint measures saying, 'What good is this going to do anyone?'. Science and Innovation Minister Lord Drayson said: 'There is no question of replacing the British pint, but introducing the option of a brand new imperial measure is good for consumers and providing them with far more choice.

Lots of people believe that which glass you drink a wine from doesn't matter. There will no change in the way it tastes right? Well, you might be surprised to here that it is becoming every more popular to have various wine glasses in the cabinet for the drinking of different types of wine.Mr Riedel (the famous wine ware producer) has his grandfather to thank for the different shaped glasses as he first came up with the concept of altering the size and shapes for better drinking.Lots of people have since agreed with the thinking of Riedel's grandfather and are convinced that differences can be highlighted. One of the most passionate being Shaun Green, a buyer for K & L Wine Merchants in San Francisco who says “It really does make a difference”. Riedel now have over 40 different types of wine glasses, but if you can’t afford, or haven’t got space for these glasses, which ones are vital to own?
Red Wine - You really need a big-bowled smooth and basic glass for the drinking of red wine. This enhances the ability to swish the wine in the glass and liberate its full flavours. It allows also a large percentage of the nasal area to fit in the glass and absorb the fine aromas. This is a characteristic that is also seen in a whisky glass
White Wine – The smaller-bowled glass with a higher rim is needed for drinking white wine. This allows the flavours to remain compact in the glass and the aroma to settle above the drink and not spill over.
Champagne – The long thin iconic shape of champagne glasses is needed to drink this luxury product. The narrow circumference stops any of the powerful aromas from overpowering the sinuses whilst drinking and the long body preserves the bubbles best.
All other wines basically fit into these three categories and the three styles of glass will compliment each one well. So if you haven't got these 3, you might have some shopping to do.

You might wonder why there are so many different shapes and sizes of glasses on the market today. To the uninitiated the variety may seem a little unnecessary, surely they can’t change the flavor of the liquid they hold can they? Well actually they can, and here is a breakdown of some of the most common glass types and how they affect the drink.
Whisky Glasses. There is a very good reason why people consume whisky from large-diameter glasses rather than the tall thin variety. Although mixers are sometimes added to a whisky drink, it is still frequently enjoyed straight and therefore in smaller volumes. What this means is that if it were served in a tall thin glass with ice, the ice would have to be stacked up and only a small amount would be in contact with the whisky. As ice is necessary to chill the whisky and release its deeper flavors, it’s best to serve the drink in a wide shallow glass where the ice can move around and have more contact area with the liquid, thus chilling the whisky more.
Champagne Flutes. This type of wine is served in long thin glasses and again there is a good reason for it. The bubbles in champagne contain quite a overpowering aroma that is forcefully released into the glass as the bubbles burst when the reach the surface. The sinuses are strongly effected by the gas and so the rim of the glass is kept narrow so that non of it enters the nose during the drinking process.
White and Red Wine Glassware. You will find that red wine glasses tend to have a large, deep-bowled body. What this means is that you can swish as swirl the wine about in the glass, breaking up the flavours and releasing more of them into the body of the wine. Also a wide glass means your whole nose can easily fit within it, which is important for soaking up all the rich aromas. White wine glasses are generally smaller and thinner. The reason for this is that white wine tastes better when the flavours are condensed in the glass and the aromas not absorbed so much via the nasal passage.
